ChatGPT Stopped Citing Reddit and Mainstream News
OpenLens collected brand monitoring prompts and analyzed 7,416,403 AI search citations. On August 8th, 2026 we started to see a large drop in Reddit citations. This piece outlines the changes we noticed in LLM citation patterns and how brands' AI visibility may be impacted.
Over two weeks, OpenLens noticed a 94% drop in Reddit citations in ChatGPT responses. Over the same period, other AI engines increased Reddit citations. The overall density of citations per response didn't change; preference moved toward brands' official content, government and legal websites more.

ChatGPT now cites official vendor documentation (brands' own websites) more than third-party sources. In contrast, Claude now cites mainstream news sources more than ever.
Reddit is still influential — if your ICP is on Reddit, you should continue to track and prioritise efforts there. According to Similarweb, Reddit still gets more than four billion visits per month and continues to be one of the world's most influential UGC platforms.

ChatGPT Cites the Same Number of Links. It Cites Different Sources.
TL;DR
In the last two weeks, ChatGPT's Reddit and mainstream news citation density has fallen 94%. Now, it cites government, law and official websites much more.

- Government and law citations more than doubled, from 7.8% to 19.5%.
- Citations of websites about institutions that regulate standards (like the ISO) quadrupled.
- Reddit, mainstream news, and health publisher citations dropped dramatically, about 74%.
- Google AI and Perplexity mainstream news publication citations are more or less the same. Claude is citing mainstream news more than ever, with citations having increased from 0.60% to 1.69%.
- Owned content (brands' official developer documentation and official product pages) citations grew by 162%.
- ChatGPT still gives 10 to 11 links per answer. It cites different sites, not fewer.
Corporate and SMB pages are still 33.6% of all citations, particularly within commercial discovery prompts about:
- Product comparisons
- Recommendations
- Buying guides
- How-to queries

News, Preprints and Forum Citations Fell with Reddit. Government, Standardising and Official Docs Rose.
Most of the publications that are cited more are government and law sources, then standards and certification sources, then official vendor and product docs. Nine of the top 10 are now government, law, or medical-literature properties and the tenth is a certification body. Three weeks earlier, Reddit was most-cited.

GEO Insights from the Data
As citation patterns change, so must GEO strategies. Below, we outline actionable strategies your team can implement to remain citable.
1) Invest in Documentation Over Editorial Coverage
If you're in B2B or tech, your support center, technical docs and developer portal are now more citable than press coverage of your product. Invest in canonical, crawlable documentation.
2) Ensure Your Content Is Easy to Digest for LLMs
Your content should be valuable and contain non-commodity, proprietary, and unique information. It should be well-structured and easily digestible for LLMs.
You should ensure:
- You have structured data (JSON-LD) as baseline infrastructure.
- There's a clean HTML version of the content available.
- The content is formatted to have multiple quotable claims and is formatted for optimal machine-readable structure.
3) Don't Give up on Reddit
Reddit might be being cited less in ChatGPT, but it's still influential. Don't drop all Reddit efforts if your ICP is on Reddit. Reddit is still valuable, depending on the LLM you prioritize citations in and your marketing objectives. For instance, Gemini still frequently cites Reddit. Track your visibility per LLM and prioritize initiatives according to your marketing objectives.
4) Measure and Control Your Sphere of Influence
Track your citation share separately for each LLM. Different models develop distinct source preferences, and those preferences can shift dramatically after model and search-system updates. A brand can therefore be highly influential in one AI engine while almost invisible in another, especially if you can confirm with data you own.
5) Get into Regulatory Filings, Certification Registries, or Public Comment Records
These are now all first-class citation opportunities. Think Federal Register, regulations dockets, and USDA/EPA/OSHA listings.
One way to gain visibility in public comment records is for your organization to publicly comment on regulations or drafts of them.
In the US, when the government wants to propose a new regulation (or wants to change an existing one) it will typically publish a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in the Federal Register. Your company can submit a formal written position paper at Regulations.gov.
6) Get Into Professional (.org, .edu, and .gov) Associations
This is the accessible middle tier (+70%). If you can't get into .gov sources, try:
- Sponsorships
- Clinical guidelines contribution
- Listed directories
- Co-authored position papers with associations
7) Become Certified, Listed, or Referenced in a Standard
We saw it in the data (figure four in the appendix): standards and certification bodies are a 4.4× channel.
Fairtrade.net and fairtradecertified.org citations increased almost 5×, from 27 → 130 per-10k rate.
8) Medical and Scientific Literature
Try to cite or be cited by medical and scientific literature. PubMed-indexed publications rose 92% and Cochrane Library went from zero to a top-100 domain in ten days. For health and science brands: peer-reviewed papers, registered studies, and citations in systematic reviews now outperform any blog post.
Cochrane Shows What "Authority" Means to ChatGPT Now
Cochranelibrary.com, the database of systematic reviews, went from 0 to 46 citations per 10,000. Citations of cochrane.org, the organisation's website, fell 77%. ChatGPT now prefers the primary record over the page that describes it.
We saw a large breakaway from arXiv with citations down 90% (850 → 55 citations; 99 → 10 per 10k). PubMed is now the most-cited academic source, with citations up 92% (108 → 208 per 10k).
ChatGPT Stopped Citing the Press. Claude Is Citing It More Than Ever.
News outlets that are no longer cited by ChatGPT are still cited on other LLM platforms. Our post-Aug-14 rates per 10,000 citations, calculated for each platform against that platform's own citation total:
- The New York Times: 0 on ChatGPT but 3.6 on Google AI and 3.5 on Perplexity.
- The BBC: 0 on ChatGPT, 5.4 on Perplexity.
- El País: 0.5 on ChatGPT, 4.9 on Google AI, 12.9 on Perplexity.
- Tom's Guide: 5.0 on ChatGPT but 157 on Claude.
- Forbes: 5.7 on ChatGPT, 10.6 on Google AI, 97 on Claude.
Claude has become the most media-reliant LLM in our dataset, with 1.69% news and 3.33% trade press citations in the last week, both dataset highs.
Specialist and Reference Content Is Cited More than News-Cycle Content
Now, only 1 in 400 ChatGPT citations is a news citation (0.25% across the August 14–23 window).
Weekly share of each engine's own citations · June average, July average, then single weeks. Claude's weekly citation volume is far smaller than ChatGPT's, so treat the level as noisy; the direction has held across recent weeks. Both panels share one y-axis. Source: OpenLens citation database · ChatGPT subset: 957,946 citations, Jun 1 – Aug 23, 2026.
Specialist and reference content survived better than news-cycle coverage. Two outlets were cited more: Wired (46 to 61 raw citations, +111% rate) and Semrush's content arm (+90% rate).
The Wired/Semrush Pattern Is Worth Testing
The two editorial survivors share a content pattern: deeply reported, reference-style, data-first pages rather than news-cycle or affiliate-roundup content.
That's two properties on a base of 61 citations, so it is a lead rather than a finding. Test it against your own content before you rebuild anything around it. The engine-diversification point below rests on much firmer ground.
Also, remember that ChatGPT is now the worst engine in our dataset for media citations, Google AI is roughly flat, Perplexity's trade press share is at a three-month high, and Claude is citing news more than at any point we've measured.

The Drop in Reddit and Mainstream News Site Citations Is ChatGPT-Scoped, Not Internet-Wide
Share of each platform's own citations · before = Jul 18 – Aug 7, after = Aug 14 – 18, 2026. This comparison uses the shorter Aug 14 – 18 post-window, which is why ChatGPT's Reddit figure reads 0.12% rather than the 0.17% of the Aug 14 – 23 window. Source: OpenLens citation database · ChatGPT subset: 957,946 citations, Jun 1 – Aug 23, 2026.
These graphs show us that the shift in Reddit and news-site citation rates is ChatGPT-specific. No other engine shows a break on August 14. Reddit citation rates on Google AI, Perplexity and Gemini are flat to slightly up over the same window, with Google the largest Reddit citer by some distance.
In fact, Google AI's UGC and social share is ~13% of all its citations (mostly YouTube and Reddit), roughly 14× ChatGPT's post-break UGC share of 0.90%.
Google is the one engine that moves in two directions depending on the window you pick. Over the long run its Reddit citations are steadily declining: weekly 3.18% in early June to 1.96% mid-August, about a 38% decline.
Interestingly, Claude never cites Reddit across every week in our data set (49,218 pre-window citations, no Reddit).
Reddit share of each engine's own citations · before = Jul 18 – Aug 7, after = Aug 14 – 23, 2026. Google drifts, ChatGPT falls off a cliff: over the long run Google's weekly Reddit share declines 3.18% to 1.96% (−38%), while on these short windows it reads +25% against a July 18 baseline already below its June level. Our Data Confirms the Dates of the Reddit Citation Density Drop
Mix-controlled: identical prompts in both windows · before = Jul 18 – Aug 7, after = Aug 14 – 23, 2026. On raw counts over the same windows the fall is −94% (2.95% → 0.17%). On August 8, ChatGPT's Search Query Fanout Behavior Changed
The August 8 dwindle lines up with a documented change in ChatGPT Search's query fanout behavior. Query fanout is the process by which one user question is expanded into multiple sub-queries before sources are retrieved.
On August 14, Reddit Citations in ChatGPT Plummeted
OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes describe no source or retrieval changes on that date. Here's why we think the change was OpenAI-side:
- The change survives a prompt-mix control. On the identical prompt set run in both windows, Reddit fell from 2.93% to 0.12%.
- Citations per response didn't change. ChatGPT returned 11.0 citations per response in early June and 10.2 to 11.5 through August. If our collection had degraded, we would expect the citations we capture per response to fall. They didn't. ChatGPT is not citing less.
- An independent tracker saw similar results. A different GEO platform found a similar August 14 drop with their own data. The platform saw an August 8 precursor, with a smaller magnitude (−3.83% to 0.52%, an 86% drop).
Reddit peaked at 8.85% of all ChatGPT citations on June 17, 2026. By August 16 it was 0.02% (2 citations out of 9,526). The 94% above measures ChatGPT's break from Reddit itself, not the full slide from June.
Methodology and Caveats
How to Interpret the Numbers in This Piece
Unless stated otherwise, "before" is July 18 to August 7, 2026 and "after" is August 14 to 23. Headline comparisons are mix-controlled, which means they run on 86,022 ChatGPT citations before and 54,029 after. Where we show raw counts, the same date windows contain more citations, because the raw set also includes prompts that only ran in one window.
If we compare against a July or June average instead of the July 18 window, we say so. These baselines are longer and slightly higher, so the same finding may have a different percentage.
Data
OpenLens citation database; 7,416,403 citations from live prompt responses across seven AI platforms, Feb 26 – Aug 23, 2026. ChatGPT subset used here: 957,946 citations from 87,681 cited responses, Jun 1 – Aug 23.
Mix Control
All headline pre/post comparisons are computed only on prompts that produced responses in both windows, ruling out changes in tracked-prompt composition. Raw (uncontrolled) numbers are directionally identical (Reddit 2.95% → 0.12%).
The post window is 10 days (Aug 14–23); all cross-window comparisons use shares or per-10k rates, never raw counts, except where both are shown.
Category Classification
Rule-based taxonomy over ~1,420 domains covering ~70% of citations in the August 14 to 23 window; the remainder is long-tail (<16 citations/domain), overwhelmingly small corporate sites.
Our prompt panel skews toward commercial and brand-monitoring prompts (hence the large "corporate & SMB" category).
Language distribution:
- English — ~62%
- Spanish — ~19%
- German — ~4.5%
- French — ~2.3%
- Dutch — ~2.2%
- Hindi — ~2.1%
- Russian — ~1.8%
- Japanese — ~1.6%
- Chinese — ~1.4%
- Italian — ~1%
- Everything else — ~2.5%
Robustness
The Reddit collapse isn't just because of how our dataset was assembled. You can slice the data different ways, hold the underlying prompts and projects constant, and you still see the same collapse.
Beyond the pooled mix control, we tested whether the shift replicates within independent fixed prompt sets (per prompt and per client project) so no single high-volume panel can be driving the result.
Per-Prompt Paired Test
675 prompts had ≥20 ChatGPT citations in both windows; 303 of them cited Reddit before the break. Of those 303:
- Reddit share fell in 301 of 303 (two rose).
- 284 of 303 (94%) dropped to literally zero Reddit citations.
- Pooled share within these Reddit-citing prompts: 5.62% → 0.19%.
- One-sided sign test: p ≈ 3e-87.
Per-Project Replication
31 client projects had ≥200 ChatGPT citations in both windows, spanning different industries, languages, and countries. Reddit share fell in 31 of 31 (15 to exactly zero), and the government/law share rose in 25 of 31.
Illustrative extremes: one project went 8.60% → 0.30% Reddit; another's government share jumped 14.4% → 45.5%.
Prompt Distribution Sets
The prompt sets measured are commercial-discovery queries: comparisons, recommendations, "best X" buying guides, alternatives, and how-to questions of the kind consumers and businesses type when evaluating products and services.
They span B2B SaaS and data/tech tools, food and beverage, health and dental, marketing and creative services, HR, fintech, real estate, and cybersecurity, across US, European, and Latin American markets (~62% English, ~19% Spanish, with a German/Dutch/French tail). The distribution is long-tailed. No brand or vertical dominates, and the largest topic accounts for roughly 5% of citation volume.
